Nikon D700 Entry Level Full Frame DSLR but Is it a Canon killer?

Nikon today launched its long awaited entry level full frame Digital SLR, the Nikon D700, but will it be the Canon EOS 5D killer?

By far the most anticipated feature is its 12.1 full frame FX CMOS sensor that produces exceptionally low noise at an extremely wide ISO range, and at price point that places it in direct competition with Canon’s hugely successful EOS 5D.

So what else has Nikon bundled into the D700 and will it impact Canon dominance at this level?

Looking over the specs below yes it is a significant release, finally giving Nikon a foot in to this entry level full frame market which Canon presently dominates,

By launching a camera which from its specs will in many areas beat Canon’s 5D.

But for how long?

With Canon expected to announce two new entry level full frame DLSRs (the EOS 3D and the EOS 6D) in the next few months and with most creditable rumours pointing to full frame sensors in the 14 to 20 MP range, along with features that at least match Nikons D700 for Canon’s EOS 3D, its not expected that Nikon will cut too much into Canons current market dominance at this level.

With an Recomended Retail Price of $2999   I am sure many Nikon fans will jump at this camera.

I don't agree at all even with only 12MP the D700 will be far superior to anything released by Canon in the entry level full frame market, but thats my opinion

I am a Nikon user, and will be happy to say YES. Unfortunately, regardless any other possible technical difference, I have to say NO. 5D is only a bit beyond a half price of D700. I am considering to go full frame, and I think I would go 5D way.
